Golden Milk Batter: The Lowdown
Golden milk is truly a miraculous elixir: comfortingly warm, invigoratingly spicy, and perfect hot beverage for cool, crisp Autumn days.
This recipe in particular originates from a little coffee and used book shop in Chehalis, Washington called Shakespeare & Company, run by two amazing people, Karen and Mo. If you’re ever in the vicinity of Central Washington, it’s definitely worth your while to stop by and grab a cup of golden milk and maybe a book and muffin, too.
When you make this recipe, the batter will store for several weeks in an air-tight container in the fridge and will yield many cups thereafter, depending on how strong you like your brew.
It’s a perfect nightcap for guests after a party, or as a supplemental potion for anyone who has trouble with chronic inflammation, as turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory, especially when paired with black pepper.

Easy and Comforting Golden Milk Batter
Equipment
- Small Sauce Pan
- Jar with Lid
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup ground turmeric
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 cup of water
- 1/2 tablespoon coconut oil optional
- 1 cup soy or plant-based milk, heated + 1 tablespoon (or more) batter
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup, or agave nectar, or sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Combine the tumeric, cinnamon, ground ginger, black pepper, and cardamom together in a small sauce pan with 1 cup of water. Bring the mixture to a boil, whisking frequently.
- Once boiling, turn the heat to low, and continue to stir until it thickens to about the consistency of wet sand. Remove the batter from the heat, and mix in the coconut oil until fully incorporated (optional).
- Let cool, and then store the batter in an air-tight container in the fridge. It’ll last several weeks.
- To make a cup of GM, simply heat up your favorite plant-based milk (mine is soy) in a small pan or microwave, and then add a tablespoon (or two) of the batter to it. If you have a sweet tooth, add a little maple syrup, agave, or sugar, too.

Thanks for the recipe! I like the idea of a batter rather than a powder because it’s easier to stir into the hot milk. Good with oat milk and maple syrup.

Thanks, Jacob! I prefer the batter to the powder, too.
